Plnt – the netherlands
Category: Small but Mighty
Bar Botanique is a lively all-day restaurant and bar in the heart of Amsterdam-Oost. Known for its tropical, relaxed vibe, it’s a local favorite where people drop by for breakfast, lunch, dinner, or late-night drinks.
True to its name, the space feels like a botanical hideaway full of greenery and color. The planting throughout the space was thoughtfully reimagined to support both atmosphere and plant health. The greenery is now mostly supported by a vulkaponic system — a soil-free, mineral-based substrate that not only helps the plants thrive but supports the overall sustainability and functionality of the design, especially in the hospitality sector.
The layout of the restaurant gave us the opportunity to work with lots of vertical space. High ceilings and a split-level floorplan at the back allowed for tall trees and palms (some up to 3 or 4 meters) which create a layered, open feeling and a sense of dynamic. These taller elements add warmth, scale, and natural movement throughout the space.
As a guest, you can really walk ‘underneath the trees’. A wide variety of plant species was used. From dramatic large-leafed palms, to a statement Ficus tree, hanging Tetrastigma vines and smaller accent greenery; creating contrast, rhythm, and interesting visuals from every angle of the restaurant. Each plant truly plays a role in shaping the space’s warm and welcoming atmosphere.
Bar Botanique is a clear example of a project that’s small but mighty. While the space of the restaurant is quite small, the impact of the greenery is bold and memorable. It creates a distinct identity. Without the plants, the entire character of the space would shift. It would feel bare, cold, and acoustically harsh — lacking the warmth, softness, and atmosphere that make it so inviting.
The greenery is not just an addition; it’s essential to the experience. It defines how people feel the moment they walk in, and why they want to stay at this beautiful place.
