One of the central elements of the Dorothea Hotel’s interior design concept is plant decoration and creating a nature-inspired experience.
Designed by the Milan-based studio Lissoni & Partners, the inner courtyard blends lush greenery with natural light filtering through a glass roof, forming a harmonious union of aesthetics and function. The courtyard features a variety of plants in different sizes and textures, enriching the space visually while helping to define its structure.
A key highlight is an 8-meter-tall Bucida tree placed at the center of the atrium, serving as a striking focal point. Tall plants in elongated raised beds divide the courtyard into zones, creating soft, natural transitions that contrast beautifully with the clean lines of the building’s modern metal framework.
The selection and arrangement of plants reflect the courtyard’s eclectic character, inspired by three distinct styles of traditional Italian courtyards. The intentional pairing of colors and shapes introduces subtle contrast to the architectural elements, enhancing the visual experience.
For guests and visitors, the presence of greenery offers a meaningful connection to nature, even within the confines of the building.
One of the most unique features is the green wall next to the entrance, inspired by Archduke Joseph’s botanical garden. Climbing plants cover the surface, and herbs like basil, rosemary, and thyme are also planted, releasing a soothing aroma that welcomes arriving guests. This green wall is not just decorative—it engages the senses, reinforcing the feeling of being close to nature in an urban, enclosed environment.
The plant-focused design of the Dorothea Hotel’s inner courtyard offers more than aesthetic value—it shapes the way the space is used. With thoughtfully selected greenery and the aromatic green wall, the courtyard provides a calming and inspiring experience that uniquely blends nature with contemporary design.
