A Breath of Fresh Air: Transforming Hospital Environments with Biophilic Design.

Last year, a remarkable transformation unfolded at the NKI AVL Antoni van Leeuwenhoek hospital, where the entire ground floor central hall was imbued with the calming presence of nature.

This ambitious greening project, a collaborative effort by the Ronald Moerings Foundation, Leaf bv, C Groen, the hospital itself, and a host of dedicated volunteers of the Foundation, highlights the profound importance of incorporating biophilic design into healthcare settings. The initiative was made possible through generous funding from Dutch horticulture and trade companies within the plant cultivation sector, channelled via the Ronald Moerings Foundation who also collect money for cancer research on a yearly basis for the hospital. Furthermore, the construction and placement of the green elements saw an outpouring of support from numerous volunteers, demonstrating a collective commitment to enhancing patient well-being.

The design approach varied across the hall, creating distinct zones of tranquillity. The initial section embraces a subtle green presence, featuring discreet plant furniture integrated with seating, such as the Leaf Low Divider and Green Base Connect units. This offers a quiet, understated natural touch. Moving into the central part of the hall, a complete green living room has been created. Here, the Leaf Light Divider and Green Base Connect are utilized in multiple configurations, complemented by two
“green bridges” and a section adorned with stunning artificial planting. This vibrant space provides a more immersive natural experience, designed to uplift spirits and offer a peaceful respite. The final section of the hall resembles a sophisticated hotel lobby, where the biophilic design elements are truly showcased. Beyond additional green bridges, this area features a striking moss wall incorporating the AVL logo,
alongside elegant light-coloured pots housing large, commanding plants.

The most profound impact of this project lies in the feedback received from visitors. For individuals navigating the emotional and physical challenges of cancer treatment, or supporting loved ones through it, the opportunity to wait in a beautiful, serene, and verdant environment has been overwhelmingly positive.
The consistent stream of appreciative reactions since the project’s completion underscores the tangible benefits of green spaces in promoting a sense of calm and well-being. The Ronald Moerings Foundation continues to provide ongoing advisory support to ensure the plants thrive. Crucially, where necessary, grow lights have been installed and biological insect control, guaranteeing the plants maintain their
exceptional growth and healthy appearance.

This commitment to continuous care ensures the hospital’s green oasis remains a vital source of comfort and rejuvenation for all who pass through its doors.

This project serves as a powerful testament to how strategic greening can profoundly impact the healing environment, offering solace and strength to those who need it most.
