mobilane – the netherlands

The headquarters of the Sartorius Group in Göttingen features an impressive and tranquil central atrium that connects three floors of open-plan workspace. At the core of this multifunctional space, a striking green installation by GEFÄSSERIE – Die Wandbegrüner draws the eye upward across nearly nine meters of living greenery. Three vertical plant walls with the Mobilane LivePanel living wall system, spanning a total of approximately 95 m², create a natural axis within the building, establishing a seamless visual and functional connection between the ground floor and upper levels.

This project was completed and installed in 2019, making it a mature and fully established example of long-term indoor landscaping. Designed not merely as a decorative feature, it serves as a fully integrated biophilic intervention that enhances the experience of employees, visitors, and clients alike. With a strong focus on indoor climate, wellbeing, and resilience, the living walls embody both architectural refinement and ecological consciousness.

The plant walls consist of 471 interchangeable cassettes integrated into Mobilane’s LivePanel Indoor system, a modular and low-weight green wall solution (approx. 40 kg/m²). Each cassette (40 × 40 cm) holds 9 plants, creating a textured, layered appearance. In total, more than 4,200 plants were used across the walls, contributing to the lush, immersive green experience that defines the atrium. Species were selected for visual variety, air-purifying capabilities, and long-term vitality. The planting palette includes Epipremnum aureum, Asplenium nidus, Philodendron, Dracaena Lemon Surprise, and Schefflera arboricola, offering lush tropical foliage in multiple tones and leaf forms. The vertical gardens form the backdrop to a planted lounge zone featuring a large indoor tree, integrated seating, and an espresso bar.

This area serves as an informal meeting space, a place for relaxation, and a visual anchor for all levels of the building. Natural daylight enters through skylights above, supporting healthy plant growth and reducing reliance on artificial lighting. Designed with sustainability in mind, the project is located within a gas-free, solar-powered, BREEAM-NL ‘Outstanding’ certified building. It reflects the Sartorius Group’s values of innovation, environmental stewardship, and employee wellbeing.

Since its installation in 2019, the plant walls have been in continuous use, professionally maintained, and remain vibrant and fully functional to this day.
