Plant designs – united kingdom
Category: Small but Mighty
At the Stonecutter building, we had the pleasure of being asked to design a custom planting mix, with the aim of bringing unity to two reception spaces.
The site features bespoke joinery that is thoughtfully integrated throughout the receptions. Custom planting mixes were developed for the different zones to ensure the selected plants thrive under varying lighting conditions. In collaboration with the architect and in support the original building’s vision of angular, natural forms, we chose plants that replicated the unique angles in the building. Larger species such as Ficus Lyrata and Caryota Mitis emulate the Y shape that is repeated in elements throughout the build’s design, such as the slanted pattern of the ceiling and windows.
With an open plan to the building’s ground floor, keeping free flow in the space was necessary, whilst softening the divide between these two adjacent areas. Featuring a small cafeteria space and stairwell area in one of the receptions, creative design solutions were required for restricted space, tiered planting and flexibility for multi-functional use. Making artful use of joinery and integrating plant beds into the reception staircase whilst keeping the seating and stairwell functional was key.
A standout feature is the statement 3.5 metre Ficus Nitida which serves as a soft, organic divider between the two reception areas, situated within the main bed and surrounded by lush tropical underplanting, with a mix of Philodendron varieties, Ficus Moclame and trailing Cissus ‘Ellen Danica’.
This fulfilled the client’s vision for natural separation between the spaces, avoiding any hard lines – providing partitioning whilst making this relatively small space feel more open and airy. Although the space is compact, it offers a range of different lighting conditions, such as abundant natural light from large windows, as well as more shaded areas that receive filtered light from the prominent Ficus tree.
The building has achieved an impressive number of accreditations: a BREEAM Excellent rating, an EPC B rating and WELL Gold standard. These reception areas’ tailored planting plan is a continuation of this forward-thinking, sustainable design.
