plant designs – united kingdom
Category: Large Indoor Greenery
One of our most ambitious projects to date, Uncommon’s newest Holborn location reimagines the co-working experience by blending creativity, functionality and well-being. Guided by biophilic design principles, the space connects people with nature – from being surrounded by plants and natural scents to immersive soundscapes.
Lead by our Designer Robin Scorletti, we worked closely with Uncommon’s interior design team for two years, from concept stage, through complex installation and now the ongoing care. Creating dynamic, vibrant planting that seamlessly integrates with the architectural layout. Our approach combined extensive joinery planting, modular planters integrated with furniture and a varied selection of freestanding and desktop ceramic planters. These were carefully designed to complement interior and exterior spaces and work with the diverse workspace needs.
This location features a range of private and shared spaces: quiet areas for focus, collaborative spaces for teamwork, and wellness zones for calm and restoration. These areas promote “activity-based working”, which is a design approach that enables employees to choose different work settings depending on the nature of their tasks.
This required flexible planting that complements the transition between the different uses of these spaces, with greenery that thrives in varied conditions. Integrated planting runs throughout the curved seating of the co-working spaces, in both the ground and lower ground floor areas. An on-site bar fringed with lush, naturally preserved foliage provides refreshments on the lower floor, with preserved greenery continuing to weave through the café area upstairs. Up on the sunny rooftop terrace, exterior trough planting connects outdoor seated areas and creates calm spaces to meet and unwind. Adaptable designs accommodate the different events, workshops and members’ needs, supporting the long-term vitality of the plants. Further amenities such as a wellness studio and café provide holistic support for members’ physical and mental well-being, enhanced with freestanding live plants and preserved planting in these areas.
By selecting a wealth of plants that promote well-being and natural aesthetics, we supported Uncommon’s mission on sustainability, both environmentally and in terms of use of the space. Hundreds of plants were chosen not only for their beauty but also for their ability to improve physical and mental well-being. Plants were chosen for their ability to thrive in the space while needing to be movable and cope with high traffic. Use of modular planters and the sustainable substrate Vulkaponic ensure long term plant health, rather than requiring wasteful replacements due to changing conditions caused by moving the displays. Paired with advanced ventilation and filtration systems, the planting design promotes health while adhering to sustainability goals.
Through harmonizing nature and modern design, we’ve created an oasis that reflects Uncommon Holborn’s vision: fostering creativity, productivity, and well-being, while prioritizing ethical practices and environmental responsibility. Fulfilling their mission to craft exceptional workspaces that enhance the experience and satisfaction of their occupants and guests.
